Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
The fisheries sector in Yauri Local Government Area (LGA) in Kebbi State plays a crucial role in the local economy, providing livelihoods for many households. The geopolitical landscape in the region significantly impacts the development and sustainability of the fisheries sector. Yauri is strategically located along the Niger River, which supports a thriving fishing industry. However, geopolitical challenges such as political decisions on resource allocation, the establishment of water management policies, and conflicts over fishing zones have hindered the optimal development of the fisheries sector (Mohammed & Bello, 2023). The influence of local and state governance, regional agreements, and international water management policies contribute to both the challenges and opportunities within the fisheries industry in Yauri (Umar, 2024).

The study aims to examine the geopolitical factors that affect local fisheries in Yauri, including issues of water resource governance, land ownership, and political leadership's role in facilitating or hindering sustainable fishing practices. Understanding these factors will help policymakers create strategies that benefit both the fishing communities and the overall regional development of Kebbi State (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Yauri LGA faces significant challenges in its fisheries sector, with geopolitical tensions and mismanagement of resources impeding the growth of this vital industry. The lack of adequate policies to govern local fisheries, coupled with disputes over fishing rights and land use, negatively affects the livelihoods of local fishermen and the sustainability of the industry. This study seeks to appraise the geopolitical impacts on local fisheries and provide recommendations for improving the sector.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the impact of local and regional political decisions on the fisheries industry in Yauri LGA.
  2. To assess the role of water management policies in shaping the sustainability of fisheries in Yauri LGA.
  3. To propose recommendations for improving the management of local fisheries in Yauri LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do geopolitical factors influence the local fisheries in Yauri LGA?
  2. What role do political and water management policies play in shaping the sustainability of fisheries in Yauri?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to improve the management of fisheries in Yauri LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Geopolitical factors significantly affect the sustainability and growth of local fisheries in Yauri LGA.
  2. Political and water management policies have a direct impact on the local fisheries industry in Yauri LGA.
  3. Geopolitical strategies can enhance the management and sustainability of fisheries in Yauri LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it will offer insights into the impact of geopolitical factors on the fisheries sector in Yauri LGA, an essential part of the local economy. By assessing the role of policies and political decisions, the research will provide practical recommendations for improving the fisheries sector’s sustainability. The findings will be useful for local and state policymakers, environmental agencies, and stakeholders in the fishing community.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Yauri LGA in Kebbi State, particularly assessing the geopolitical impacts on local fisheries. The limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data from local fisheries communities due to accessibility issues and political sensitivities around land and water resource management.
